Up to 10% of all cancer occurrences are considered genetic. For anyone with a family history of breast, colorectal, endometrial, lung, ovarian, pancreatic or skin cancer, the fear of the unknown can certainly cause anxiety. Adding to the fear is the "Angelina Jolie Effect," where she and other celebrities have announced their decisions to have prophylactic surgeries to prevent cancers. However, despite all the press about genetic cancers, most people are unsure whether their family's health history is cause for concern. Discussing this history with a genetics expert can alleviate worry and, if necessary, provide guidance for creating an early detection plan with a doctor. 

The Hereditary Colon Cancer Foundation works with people who are at high risk, or have already been diagnosed with, a hereditary form of colorectal cancer. Someone is considered high risk when a first degree relative was diagnosed with colorectal cancer under the age or 50 OR if two or more first degree relatives have had any cancer.

For those who are diagnosed with a hereditary form of colon cancer, the Foundation supports them through education and personal assistance to ensure they receive up to date, quality medical care. 

Colorectal cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer related mortality in the U.S., although it is very treatable. Through early detection, cancer risk can be reduced in some cases from nearly 100% down to 0%!
