This year, Holy Cross Ministries helped launch the first MDLA program in the country. Medical Debt Legal Advocates are community health workers specifically trained to advocate for people overwhelmed by medical bills and debt, with a special focus on immigrant families in Summit, Salt Lake and Wasatch Counties who are unable to navigate our complex American medical system.

An MDLA will not only help people get out from under the crush of medical debt, but they will also help vulnerable people avoid falling into debt in the first place.

The training is specifically designed for non-lawyers to be able to help in a narrow but urgently needed aspect of the legal world—cases involving medical debt. The program was conceptualized by Innovations For Justice in conjunction with the Utah Supreme Court to help fill the justice gap—a gap that exists for so many people who cannot afford access to justice through a costly law firm.

This $10,000 fundraising effort will specifically train two additional Spanish-speaking community health workers to become Medical Debt Legal Advocates.

Carmen Cardenas, Holy Cross Ministries’ Promotora (community health worker) and the first MDLA in Utah.

Your donation will be matched 100% by the generosity of a caring donor.
