Give Smiles to Kids with Cancer!
Funds raised through Live PC Give PC will help support kids and families from Summit County. Each year, 5-6 kids from Summit County are diagnosed with cancer and similarly-treated illnesses. This devastating diagnosis bring financial strain and psychological stress to the entire family. In effect, it steals the childhood of both the patient and their siblings, and traumatizes the whole family. Camp Hobe' tries to help!
Camp Hobe' is a psychosocial support program for children being treated for cancer (or similarly-treated disorders) and their families, through summer camps and family outings. Our mission is to create an atmosphere that enhances self-esteem, fosters independence and friendships, and offers a sense of belonging. Our in-person summer camp program offers 3 sessions each summer: one for kids ages 7-11 years, another for teens ages 12-19 years, and a third for kids ages 4-6 years. During the 2020 COVID pandemic, we added a virtual camp program for ages 6-19 years, which will be a consistent offering moving forwards. Our family outing program offers 2 to 4 free family events throughout the year.
Participants are given the freedom to "just be kids" for a time and to stretch their limits physically, mentally, and socially. We provide the opportunity for these families to forget the realities of life and meet others facing similar experiences. The campers and families of Camp Hobe' experience the joy of life as it was meant to be for a child, full of laughter, music, pranks, adventure, and fun.
Families dealing with the expenses of treatment are often unable to afford the luxuries of camp or evenings out. Therefore, we charge minimal registration fees for the camp programs ($35/child for the 5-day in-person sessions, $15/child for 2-day in-person sessions, $10/child for Virtual camp), which do not come near to covering our actual program costs of almost $150 per child per day of in-person camp. Family events are provided free of charge.
