Mountain Towns 2030

Mountain communities are on the front lines of climate change, we’re seeing the impacts every day - threatening our cherished places and local economies. Founded in 2019 in Park City, Mountain Towns 2030 is building a powerful movement of mountain rural communities leading on ambitious climate commitments and solutions.

Park City was the first US mountain community to set a target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Our mission now is to leverage this bold leadership to inspire and guide every mountain community to set the same target, showing that it can be done and scaling our global impact.  

Since 2019, we have scaled our organization to support mountain communities nationwide, producing an annual Summit that brings together mountain community and ski resort leaders in a collaborative two-day forum to learn about solutions, trade ideas and best practices and give every community, large and small, the capacity to tackle the most complex climate challenges. The Summit has grown from 200 attendees in 2019 to over 550 in 2024.

Given the results of the recent election, climate progress will likely face a major setback in 2025 with possible cuts to the EPA, the Department of the Interior, NOAA and other key agencies, while also taking the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement and rolling back regulations such the incentives on EV’s, to name a few.

But we’ve been here before and climate action didn’t stop last time. We have the game plan and with progress stalled at the federal level, the focus will again need to be on states and municipalities where we have the will and the leverage to continue to make real progress.  Our 2025 plans double down on our efforts to empower mountain communities to meet bold zero emissions goals, while giving them opportunities to collaborate on solutions, and the guidance to deploy them.  It will also be critically important for us to advocate for, and defend the Inflation Reduction Act, a piece of legislation that has been incredibly valuable to mountain communities, providing the resources to speed their transition to clean energy.

Park City is our home and inspiration. Guided by its example, we aim to empower other communities to follow its lead, achieving the scale needed to address climate change and protecting mountain towns for generations to come.
