People's Legal Aid

People's Legal Aid (PLA) is a nonprofit law firm providing legal services and education for tenants facing eviction and debt collection matters in Utah. We believe that housing is an essential human right that is not supported through current law and court procedure. 

PLA serves our most vulnerable neighbors - people who are housing cost burdened, marginalized, and at risk of homelessness. Access to safe, stable housing is an essential human need and losing a home has been linked to losing jobs, possessions, and government aid. Maintaining housing is even more important in a market that is becoming even more unaffordable and unattainable. Evictions displace people from their communities and can saddle them with life-altering, crushing debt that can prevent them from long-term financial stability. 

Access to legal advocacy is essential for promoting equity for tenants in Utah. PLA seeks to promote access to justice and promote housing stability through the legal system. In 2021, we served 1,068 of Utah's renter households with legal consultations and representation.
