SOS Outreach

A nonprofit organization

No matter what social, societal, or economic barriers exist—SOS Outreach believes every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. We start with powerful outdoor experiences. Because it’s on the slopes or the trail that kids unearth the courage to step outside of their comfort zones, discover new strengths within themselves, and develop lifelong skills. Through our proven curriculum, we empower kids in our communities to discover their true potential; kids learn to relate well to others, understand and manage feelings, make positive decisions, and develop social responsibility.

Over 28 years, SOS has provided the support and opportunity for over 80,000 children to grow into their full potential. While providing outdoor recreation experiences for that number of youth is impressive, it’s only a partial demonstration of our impact. Using a unique combination of outdoor adventure experiences, positive adult mentorship, and leadership development opportunities, SOS enables participants to unleash their potential to thrive. Working across 15 locations in 9 states, SOS provides opportunities for personal growth for the kids in our communities who need it most.

SOS Outreach changes young lives, building character and leadership in underserved kids through mentoring outdoors.

SOS Outreach in Tahoe

SOS Outreach Programs first began in North Lake in 2005. Since then, we've expanded our North Lake outreach to include all communities from Tahoma to Truckee to Incline Village and everywhere in between.

Despite the many challenges of 2020, we quickly and safely pivoted our programs to ensure that the support and connection that has proven essential remained. We were able to combat the social isolation our students faced and provide a ray of “normalcy” -- for kids to safely be kids and grow through the outdoors.

As the pandemic highlighted the many pre-existing inequities that face our society, it has reinforced that our work at SOS Outreach is more crucial than ever. Of the North Lake youth we engage, 87% identify as a part of a minority and 71% come from families of a household income less than $40,000 annually.

In 2020, we brought 150 kids to the mountain. This 2021-22 season, our programs have returned to pre-pandemic numbers. We are thrilled to be engaging 230 local youth from communities all around North Lake Tahoe! We are so excited to embark on our best, most impactful season yet.

Please join us with a donation and get in touch to volunteer!
