Downwind: How Failed Great Salt Lake Water Policy and Toxic Dust Create Generational Debt and Jeopardize Utah’s Future

The Case Against Nuclear Power in Utah

We encourage the development of renewable sources of energy, such as wind, as an essential step toward avoiding the unhealthy consequences of our excessive reliance on coal and petroleum.

We believe that there are several solutions that if enacted, could dramatically improve the air quality in Utah, and thereby significantly improve our health.

UPHE brought air pollution issues to the public eye in Utah over 18 years ago, and continues this work through education and outreach, and providing technical comments on state and national regulations that address the fine particulate, ozone and other toxic pollution problems that afflict Utah. Outreach campaigns include, but are not limited to:

  • General Air Pollution  - protect families from emissions from industry (refineries), wood burning, vehicle emissions, fugitive dust from gravel pits and the Great Salt Lake)
  • Great Salt Lake - the public health impacts of lowering Great Salt Lake levels can not be ignored or removed from the discussion on water policy, and UPHE is working to keep them at the forefront of the discussion.
  • Protecting Parley's Canyon - We've been leading the battle against a massive mine proposal for Parley's Canyon. Our advocacy has lead to massive protest, county council policy changes, a DAQ hearing for public concern, and delay of the process.

  • Opposing and exposing AI Data Centers & otherharmful development - The rapid expansion of AI data centers is quietly driving a cascade of environmental and public health risks that Utah cannot afford to ignore. We need SMART and SUSTAINABLE development that prioritizes quality of life for Utahns.

UPHE was founded in 2007 by a group of physicians from multiple disciplines, but all united by the same concern – “What are the health impacts of environmental pollution and what can we do to clean up our air?” Air quality has become the #1 concern for most Utahn’s according to many polls, and our #1 battle. We educate, we advocate, we inform. UPHE has grown to 400+ physicians and several thousand supporters, citizens like you who appreciate this beautiful state of Utah and want the opportunity to live in a healthy environment.

Thank you for your support! You keep us going!
