Zero Food Waste and Climate Fund

Park City Community Foundation’s Climate Fund was established to implement local, high-impact, and replicable climate solutions in our area. After identifying food waste as the key focus area, the Climate Fund officially launched the Zero Food Waste initiative in 2024.

With the goal to divert all food waste from our local landfill by 2030, the Community Foundation aims to bring together residents, businesses, local government, and even visitors to create real and impactful change. 

Since launching the Zero Food Waste initiative in 2024, we’ve made real progress. Here’s where things stand and what we’re working on now.

Progress to Date:

• 1,500+ homes in Summit County signed up for curbside food waste collection
• Over 1,000 tons of food waste diverted from the landfill since 2024 and counting! 
• 65+ local businesses diverting food waste

What we're working on now:

• Developing a partnership with USU Extension to bring at-home compost education to residents in Summit County

• Partnering with Summit County and Park City Municipal Corporation to study the feasibility of developing a compost facility in Summit County

• Offering up to 9 months of food waste collection to businesses in Summit County for free to grow commercial diversion rates. Interested? Contact Victoria, Victoria@parkcitycf.org

• Focusing on community participation by offering free food waste collection at events and partnering with local schools and other public spaces to offer collection of seasonal organics, like pumpkins! 

• In partnership with Summit County, we are making food waste collection more accessible through new neighborhood collection sites! Be on the lookout for news soon on new collection locations in Kamas and Ecker Hill.
