Every dollar counts! For every $1 you donate (up to $45,000) we can apply for $3 from the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) to fund an eviction diversion program. Give now because we must raise $45,000 by April 21, 2023.
Utah has some of the worst eviction laws and processes in the country. Evictions displace people from their communities. Eviction lead to crushing debt. People's lives are dramatically altered after being sued for an eviction.
There is hope. Housing stability is possible when tenants engage with the system. Access to legal services and community advocacy are essential tools to help tenants.
PLA is preparing to launch a new program called the Pro Se Community Clinic that is designed to provide tenants with legal and community assistance related to an eviction case. Tenants will get help negotiating settlements with their landlords, and better access to non-legal resources they may need for personal stability. The goal is to divert them from appearing in court when possible.
93% of tenants still lose their housing after appearing in Court. Attorneys representing tenants are often handcuffed by state law and even with legal counsel in an eviction hearing. The Pro Se Community Clinic will help reach tenants upstream, before their day in court, to limit the devastation and financial damage of an eviction.
Please consider a gift to PLA and help us launch the first eviction diversion program that Utah has ever had. Every donation will have an impact of 3 times more than your initial gift and make us eligible to apply for NCSC funding.
