Bringing Care Closer to Home for Wendover Families

Wendover is a strong, resilient community — but distance changes everything. When care, support, and basic resources are hours away, families carry more on their own. A single appointment can mean taking time off work, finding childcare, and driving for miles. Over time, many families share how easy it can feel to be forgotten.

Nine months ago, Holy Cross Ministries heard about babies being born at mile marker 27 — far from consistent care and close resources. That moment called us back to Wendover after nearly 20 years. Since then, through our community health worker, Lucia Benitez, we’ve shown up with diapers, hygiene kits, family nights, prenatal and doula support, car seat safety, counseling connections, and access to mammograms. We’ve stood with families starting over after abuse, parents seeking guidance, and neighbors quietly asking for help.
