When someone is hurt far from help, the injury is only part of what they carry. Fear, helplessness, and shock can outlast a broken bone. How we respond in those first moments shapes how a person heals, both physically and emotionally.

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes how common trauma is and how deeply it affects people's bodies, minds, and relationships. Instead of asking "What's wrong with you?", it asks "What happened to you, and what do you need right now?"

In practice, that means creating physical and emotional safety, being honest and transparent, involving people in their own care, respecting their voice and choices, and honoring cultural and personal context. It is not a separate treatment. It is a way of doing everything, from splinting a fracture to sitting beside someone who is frightened.

How Mountains to Mountains puts it into practice

Trauma-informed care is woven through every Mountains to Mountains course. Our participants learn to control bleeding, stabilize injuries, and make sound decisions in remote settings. They also learn to recognize the psychological side of emergencies and to offer psychological first aid, steadying a person emotionally as well as physically.

Our Wilderness Medicine: Trauma-Informed Care courses teach community members, outdoor enthusiasts, and recreation groups to care for injured people when professional help is hours away, with attention to the patient's emotional experience alongside their physical needs.

Trail Ready, our two-day wilderness medicine program for teens ages 13–18, builds practical first aid skills alongside psychological first aid, decision-making, and peer-pressure awareness, preparing young people to respond calmly in the backcountry and while traveling abroad.

Through our chapters, research division, and international partnerships, we share medical training and traditional knowledge between mountain communities around the world, learning from one another about resilience and recovery.

Why your gift matters

Emergencies don't wait for an ambulance, and trauma doesn't end when the bleeding stops. Your donation puts lifesaving and life-steadying skills into the hands of the people most likely to be first on scene: neighbors, teens, guides, and families.

Your support helps us offer scholarships so cost is never a barrier, bring training to underserved and remote communities, equip participants with first aid supplies, and grow partnerships with mountain communities abroad.

Every gift helps someone, somewhere, be ready when it matters most.
