In 2002, YSA was formed with the challenge to increase the number of local children participating in winter sports.  Today, we introduce kids to sports and healthy lifestyle activities through our after-school programs for 1st through 9th graders, raise funds to support seven competitive winter sports teams, and provide need-based scholarships for junior athletes. Programs range from introductory offerings after school to keep kids active and away from screens, to teenagers aspiring to Olympic competition.

Through our programs, we engage more than 2,800 youth each year. These programs keep youth off their screens and active in Utah’s outdoor wonderland regardless of ability to pay. Last year, YSA after-school programs provided almost 30,000 hours when kids were supervised and active. While local kids ski, snowboard, skate, ski jump, slide, mountain bike, and more, they learn leadership skills and the important life lessons of SPORT represented in our core values -- Sportsmanship, Perseverance, Optimism, Respect and Teamwork.

YSA has a proven track-record of leading a community collaboration that brings together 68 nonprofits and businesses, as well as dozens of granting organizations and volunteers to provide opportunities for our community’s children to grow and learn. For instance, YSA teamed up with nearly a dozen organizations to provide clothes, gear, safety equipment, lessons, and lift tickets to get 115 low-income elementary students from school to the mountains to learn to ski. YSA works with the Christian Center, The Solomon Fund and school counselors to identify and register low income students for programs. Park City Mountain and its Epic Promise, as well as Deer Valley Resort, step up to donate lessons and lift tickets. Rossignol provides most of the gear - skis, boards and boots - that are fitted by Switchback Sports. Bahnhoff Sports, Aloha Ski & Snowboard, JANS, and Utah Ski & Golf fill in the gaps for our gear. Scott provides goggles, while the Park City Community Foundation chips in to purchase helmets. The efforts of people in our town working together to get kids - regardless of income-tax bracket - outside, active and away from their screens are humbling and inspiring.

YSA’s collaboration does not stop with teaching kids to ski. YSA is a cooperative organization bringing together various teams, clubs and programs of Park City into a collaborative community. YSA works with Athletic Republic, Basic Recreation, Beau Collective, CrossFit Park City, Deer Valley Resort, EATS, Egyptian Youth Theatre, English Photography, Figure Skating Club of PC, Jordanelle State Park, In Home Chef, Kimball Art Center, Kiska Digital, Live Well Center, The Mine Bouldering Gym, National Ability Center, Oak + Willow Yoga, Painting by Design, Park City Curling Club, Park City Ice Arena, Park City, Ice Miners, PC MARC, Park City Rowing Club, Park City Ski & Snowboard, Park Speed Skating Club, Red Flower Studios, Rise Boxing, Simbol Communications, Soldier Hollow, Team Utah Snowboarding, Utah Olympic Park (UOP), UOP Bobsled & Skeleton, Wasatch Luge Club, White Pine Nordic Center & Young Riders to provide these programs.

Our school partners include:  Park City School District Elementary Schools, Ecker Hill Middle School, Treasure Mountain Junior High, Weillenman School of Discovery, Park City Day School, South Summit Middle, Silver Summit Elementary & Silver Summit Academy.

The YSA takes to heart statistics that show children involved in sports lead healthier lives, demonstrate more motivation and initiative, and make better choices than those who are idle. Through our programs and scholarships all local children are offered the chance to participate in sports regardless of their financial status.
